Muzica naturii, a valurilor, a frunzelor, a lanurilor de grau, ne sugereaza intrucatva caracterul acelei muzici date omului odata cu stapanirea asupra Edenului. Ea era fara rimt in acceptiunea moderna a cuvantului, se canta la unison si nu avea un centru tonal de gravitatie. Maniera aceasta de cantare a durat aproximativ cinci mii de ani, mai precis pana la sfarsitul primului mileniu crestin, cand in muzica de cult isi face aparitia cantarea pe doua si pe trei voci in cvinte, cvarte si octave paralele. Noua forma de cant armonic este atribuita calugarului Hucbald, precum si lui Guido d Arezzo, acestia doi fiind cei care au notat astfel de tehnici corale apoi apare sec.XI-XII cantarea in terte si sexte paralele, care in mod curent se numea faux-bourdon.
